Unemployment fell slightly in February – Parool.nl

Unemployment in the Netherlands fell slightly in February, to 7.1 percent of the workforce. According to figures by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) has published today. In January, the unemployment rate stood at 7.2 percent.

The Netherlands had 633,000 unemployed last month. There were 12,000 fewer than in January. The number of people that have had a job, according to CBS, however, remained virtually unchanged. The decline in unemployment is therefore the result of a shrinking workforce, according to the statistics office.

On balance, last month 13,000 people less working or actively looking for work. In recent months, there was still a slight growth of the labor force, which still employs more than 8.9 million people.

Minister Lodewijk Asscher (Social Affairs) nevertheless spoke of good news. “Slowly but surely we see signs of recovery in the labor market,” he said in a comment. Remains unemployment the Minister ‘too high’.

The number of unemployment insurance benefits fell slightly to 455,000 in February, it remains to figures from benefits agency UWV. The number of benefits to people over 50 increased last month, in all other age groups showed a decrease
