The Netherlands also supports Chinese investment bank – Financieele Dagblad (Registration)

Netherlands supports China’s plans to establish an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and joins as’ prospective founding member. That Saturday was announced after a meeting of Prime Minister Rutte with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the Chinese Bo’ao Forum.

China has AIIB such an important role in developing better connections by land and sea between China and its neighbors, through the construction of roads and new ports. In addition, China will feel underrepresented in existing institutions, and hopes with the bank to get a firmer finger in the pie in the institutional world of finance and economics dominated even in the eyes of China now mostly by developed economies.

“We want to make a step forward, and create a regional center for financial cooperation. China wants to strengthen ties in the field of monetary stability, investment and financing further tightening, “said Xi Saturday at the kickoff of the Bo’ao Forum, the Asian equivalent of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Dertig all member countries

The AIIB strives for a balance sheet total of $ 50 billion (€ 46 billion), of which China accounts for the bulk. Chinese state television has just print them: each new member newsreaders sums full participant list. After including Germany, France and Britain have now joined Russia and the Netherlands, and is listed on more than 30 countries.

Prior to the encounter said Rutte still ‘some snags’ around a Dutch member of the AIIB. “We will discuss this subject, it is on the agenda, but the further decisions have to be taken.” Now look the last folds are smoothed Netherlands is on board

Japan reluctant

Japan strongly represented in different international institutions, has prepared himself for the time being extremely cautious. Also the US is still around and sees the initiative especially as a competitor of the Washington-based World Bank and the IMF. Seems a membership of the US no longer excluded, also important allies like South Korea and Australia have signed in.

In a speech at the Bo’ao Forum stressed Xi that the initiative is true for China, but that there can be no Chinese autocracy. “There will rise a choir composed of all the participating countries here,” he said cryptically. “We will ensure that the AIIB complements the existing institutes.
