Union demands another name for heavy lifting 'Pieter Schelte' – Financieele Dagblad (Registration)

The international transport union ITF demands a different name for the heavy lift ‘Pieter Schelte’. The ITF also wants Shell abandons the services of the Allseas-mammoth ship as long as that is not yet the case.

Several organizations, including Jewish, all spoke out against the name of the heavy lift offshore company Allseas. ‘Pieter Schelte’ is a reference to the father of Edward Heerema, the chief executive of Allseas. Pieter Schelte Heerema first worked for the Waffen-SS before he became active in the offshore industry.

Shame

Paddy Crumlin, ITF president, calls the name of the largest ship in the world a ‘disgrace’. According Crumlin should the ship while named Pieter Schelte be denied access to the UK and European waters.

Petition

ITF has also started a petition which the oil company Shell calls to dispense with the services of the heavy lift. Shell wants later this year a number of obsolete oil rigs in the North Sea show dismantle by Pieter Schelte.

A spokesman for Allseas left in a reaction that the company has no intention to change the name of the ship. Shell said to be aware of the petition, but declined to comment further.
