The dependence of the assistance will increase especially in the northern Netherlands, according to research by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Since 2004, the percentage of people on welfare has increased especially in municipalities in the North. In places like Pekela and Oldambtmeer their share grew by more than 2 percentage points.

In 2014, the share of welfare benefits in the shrinking municipalities increased to an average 5 percent, while the average remained at 4 percent in the other municipalities of the Netherlands.
