Nanko van Buuren, director of the non-governmental organization Ibiss, this morning at the age of 63 deceased in his hometown Rio de Janeiro. This confirms Frank Plant Berg, chairman of the Dutch aid fund Ibiss.
Van Buuren lived and worked since the late eighties in Rio de Janeiro. His organization Ibiss, acronym for Brazilian Institute for Innovation in Social Health, strained for young people in various slums of the city. In December 2007 he was awarded in Groningen as an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his “significant contribution to a better society with less social and economic inequality which human rights are respected.” Van Buuren leaves a wife and foster son behind.
During his more than 25 years in Brazil were also raised doubts about the veracity of Van Buurens stories and accountability of his organization to donors. Who examined NRC recent weeks.
