More than 33% of the public transport chip cards are lost or expired, 20% of the cards is used weekly. In total issued approximately 21 million units.

About 3 million cards are weekly used to travel by public transport in the Netherlands. This means that only 20% of ale activated OV-chip cards are used with regularity.

Of the more than 21 million public transport chip cards issued 14 million are actually used in the Netherlands. The remaining 7 million tickets are not sold yet, are lost or lie somewhere at home in the closet.

About half of the active public transport chip cards in the name of the traveler.

Translink has announced that they have received in 2014 more than 2.15 billion transactions to be processed through a smartcard. This number includes the upgrading of the public transport chip cards. Since July 2014 the smartcard has become the only means of payment in public transport in the Netherlands. There is therefore a strong increase in the use of the public transport chip cards if compared with the use of the public transport chip cards in 2013.
