Province of Overijssel against selling state share uraniumverrijker Urenco – Financieele Dagblad (Registration)

The province of Overijssel is against the sale of the government stake in the Almelo uraniumverrijker Urenco. That the Provincial Executive replied in response to questions from the states of the Green fraction, announced Thursday the Twente newspaper Tubantia.

According to the provincial government the sale of the government stake is not desirable because of the public interest around the non-proliferation treaty and employment. In the non-proliferation treaty possession of nuclear weapons is restricted.

Green Left proposed to sell the questions following publications on the intention of the government’s share. Should privatization be put, the province is the conversation with the Cabinet. Urenco, which warned last year for continuing overcapacity in the market for enriched uranium for one-third owned by the Dutch State.

Market Conditions

But sales are also complicated by the

difficult market conditions. The uraniumverrijker suffers from falling prices and a dwindling demand which is partly caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster in more than three years ago. The poor market conditions are a setback for the shareholders, who want to get rid of Urenco. Outside the Netherlands are German energy companies RWE and EON along a third of the shares, as the British state. The Dutch government decided in 2013 to go on the last shareholder to sell.

Repaying debt

Jeroen Dijsselbloem Minister of Finance intends to use the proceeds to repay debt. According Dijsselbloem Netherlands has tacked as a sale by the British and Germans would ensure that the government as a minority shareholder would be between – probably – private parties. It would be in that situation no longer able to guarantee the public interests.
