German intelligence listened communication cables off Belgacom – The Standard

At the request of the US National Security Agency intercepted the German Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) on international communications. This was done via a hub in Frankfurt, where a pack of fiber optic cables meet. The Germans spied least ten cables managed by Belgacom, Proximus today. “The government has to react,” says Stefaan Van Hecke (Green).

The details of the bugging operation was this morning released by the Austrian Green politician Peter Pilz. He got a list in hand with a ‘priority list’, which had drafted the US National Security Agency for the German BND.

The NSA specializes in intercepting communications. This was amply demonstrated by documents whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked and including in De Standaard published.

But in recent weeks, added the German weekly Der Spiegel a special European chapter to the revelations about mass espionage. Der Spiegel revealed that the NSA works very closely with the German intelligence service. Their joint operation was given the code name “Eikonal.

It comes down to taking that German intelligence communication (such as telephone or internet) intercepted. The espionage takes place in Germany, but is primarily directed against foreign targets.

The mass of data gathered by the BND, is then searched using keywords that defines the NSA. That may be names of terror suspects, but equally email addresses multinationals or government agencies. In other words, through the German intelligence service, the NSA does to economic and diplomatic espionage in Europe

One of the places where the German BND intercepted massive data, is a hub of fiber optic cables in Frankfurt.. Along such cables running international communication. Companies and organizations from telecom providers like Proximus (former Belgacom) bandwidth such cables hire to assure a smooth communication.

In the ‘priority list’, which the Austrian Pilz caught, stand 15 telecom cables which depart from or arrive in Brussels (see below). These include a Belgacom line which runs across Germany from Brussels to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Other cables run between Brussels and Prague, and even Brussels and Moscow.

Green MP Stefaan Van Hecke, specializing in intelligence, finds that supervisor Committee I should start an investigation into the German espionage. “It is not just that one European ally the other spies. It is outrageous that the German intelligence service in front of the cart allows tensioning of the NSA. The government must respond to this. “

Proximus said to have no indication that this eavesdropping would have occurred. “Those who have made this case may give us any useful information. Currently we do not have the necessary elements to respond. We will of course investigate this matter thoroughly, “it sounds yet.
