The Dutch dealers have performed worse in 2014 than the year before. The average yield was stabbing at 0.01%, compared with 0.34% in the previous year.
This is evident from the youngest Bovag Industry Barometer. The return is after 2009, when the result was 0.00%, not been this low.
New cars
The decline in yield is attributed to the extremely low number of new passenger cars sold. Especially small and medium-sized dealerships have to bear the brunt. She struggled last year with negative returns of 0.61% and 0.19% respectively. Small dealers have an average turnover of € 4 million, the medium colleagues come to € 7 million out.
Only the big dealer organizations, an average turnover of € 19 million, maintain a good position. Last year they made a plus of 0.28%. In that category have Stern Broekhuis and Wensink recently reported positive results.
The survey shows that 45% of the Dutch dealers 2014 has been running at a loss. 10% of the best performing companies saw the return remain fairly stable at 3.79%, reports industry association Bovag. The previous year was recorded 3.99%.
Mortgage debt
De car industry has to do with a consumer who is still reluctant to purchase a new car. For many households continues to keep repaying the mortgage priority research Aumacon signaled late last year. Also this office pointed to the relatively high unemployment rate among people over 50, accounting for two-thirds of the car market. The outlook for this group are the flexible dismissal rules as from 1 July this year, not better, says Aumacon.
Car sales are also subject to seasonal patterns and related to tax changes. Approaching new aggregation rules can cause are quick to order a car for a consumer. This then leads to a momentary peak. “But the bottom line is missing primarily to buy basic lust ‘, as suggested Aumacon last year.
New competitors
In addition, the sector faces increasing competition from new entrants, such as Internet company Dealer Direct, known from the Ikwilvanmijnautoaf.nl website. This makes it easier for consumers to sell their used cars and they do not go to the dealer to exchange the car. Dealer Direct received last Friday a capital injection of Rocket Internet and Prime Ventures.
2015 counts Aumacon some improvement in sales of new vehicles in the Netherlands. However, the slight recovery in car sales in the first two months of this year has proved short-lived. In March, sales were again lower. Aumacon speaks of a setback. “In January and February were still recorded slight increases and were thus the first months since May 2014 in which sales of new cars rose again ‘, says the agency
Added up over the first three months of 2015 have been sold 110 148 new cars, compared to 107 029 units in the first quarter of last year. According Aumacon analyst Clem Dickmann figures are printed by large dealer inventories.
However, the customer shows interest in used cars. Revenues from the sale of used vehicles last year rose by 1.5%. New cars according Aumacon relatively expensive, so that more and more customers opt for a used car. Bovag further refers to the phenomenon that many new cars registered short time later automatically be selling a used vehicle.
