The American coffee chain obtained through agreements with the tax authorities millions of euros advantage. But the European Commission decided last year that allows Netherlands had granted illegal state aid.
In the deal with Starbucks taxes were levied on the profits that the company makes with the roasting of coffee beans in the Netherlands. But because the intellectual property rights of Starbucks were not in the Netherlands, the royalties for its use is not taxed in the Netherlands were.
The Cabinet did not agree with the European Commission’s decision. It was not that there was a violation of the rules and state aid.
European Court
The Hague, the case brought before the European Court of Justice. That case is still pending, but that does not matter for the repayment demanded by Brussels.
The European Commission ‘welcomes’ that the Netherlands take back the millions. Netherlands had agreed that future tax payments from Starbucks will be in line with the decision of the European Commission
