The transfer of most products and services to the highest VAT rate of 21 percent is received poorly. The increase, part of the reform of the tax system would be detrimental to employment of hairdressers and cooks, is “an attack” on the newspaper industry and brings the social importance of books and magazines “at stake”.
Sources confirmed this morning at the NRC plans of the government to throw the VAT system overhauled. The idea is that all products and services except groceries are covered by a single tariff.
This should ensure that there is an end to the forest of exemptions in the VAT rules. However, the proposal is in accordance with the Cabinet should also yield the 4 to 5 billion that can be used in the desired reduction in taxes on labor -. The main aim of the tax reform
If the increase is implemented means probably (though the details are not known), for example, a haircut is more expensive, painters higher bills should send papers and books are just as expensive as e-books. The government did therefore already aware that the resistance of trade associations which increase the brunt will be great.
- The passengers, including public transport companies and taxis
Royal Dutch Transport (KNC), trade association for include taxi and transportation companies, director Ad Toet: “This is a tax increase on the most basic necessities of every Dutch. (..) About taxes on cars is already spoken for years. This affects millions of daily public transport users and of course, a few hundred thousand users Zorgvervoer, very hard. “
- Papers
Herman Wolswinkel NDP NieuwsMedia private sector organization for all new businesses: “The planned increase in VAT is an attack on the newspaper industry. All signs are already on orange or red and there is likely to increase from 6 to 21 percent tax further to contribute. (..) The decline in newspaper editions that otherwise would occur in 24 years, will take place at a VAT increase in one fell swoop. “
- Books and magazines
Cecilia van Dalen of Dutch Publishers Association (NUV): “These are difficult times for publishers of books, newspapers and magazines and a VAT increase could be disastrous. Right now, the decline in the book industry flattens, we risk being confronted with an additional cost. In addition, the public interest is at stake. Consider the contribution of newspapers, books and magazines to our democracy, culture and education. (..) The only positive is that the cost of labor will go down. But it is our not yet clear how large these effects on our labor-intensive industry “

William Kruithof behalf of the hairdresser section of CNV Professionals”. Netherlands goes verfomfaaider soon look like going forward VAT increase. People set the haircut longer, and that’s going cost jobs. The VAT reduction to 6 percent a few years ago, we have seen that Dutch just often went to the hairdresser. A result, employment has increased from 21,000 to 26,000 jobs. Those additional 5,000 jobs lost we just get back, if it continues. And mind you, it is mainly young people who earn 10 percent above the minimum wage. So shoot it either to reduce taxes on labor “
Hairdresser Association ANKO”. For the hairdressing industry is extremely dramatic as the tax rate goes to 21 percent. This is certainly true cost 5,400 jobs. (..) We expect a shift from white to black work will take place through the increase. “
- All products, including foods except for” groceries “
Retail Netherlands: “An increase in the VAT rate hit anyway harms consumers and retailers. It can be regarded as a price shock which can cause a strong reaction among consumers and will lead to a significant reduction in turnover for retailers. Conversely, it appears that a VAT reduction is significantly more profitable for consumption and employment than an adjustment to the income tax. Shifting the burden According Retail Netherlands no solution “
Royal Horeca Netherlands (KHN).” If the government actually lower VAT rate for the hospitality industry abolishes go 35,000 jobs in the hospitality industry lost . (..) The prices go up by more VAT in our industry is detrimental to stimulate consumer spending. It simply means that a day trip, a drink is expensive dinner or an overnight stay. The government sells tubers for lemons, because on balance, the consumer is not financially is improving “
