In a bizarre denouement of the five months of protracted negotiations on resumption of aid to his country, the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras literally and figuratively his credit in Europe lost. He led his people in a breathtaking maneuver to the edge of the abyss.
The Greek citizen’s choice. The other euro countries have always proved willing to new solidarity in the form of new loans billion. All they require in return is as much certainty as possible that they are ever repaid. That is not a wanton humiliation but a legitimate demand of their own population.
The motives for the referendum Tsipras wrote Friday on his least dubious. Tsipras made his flight forward because his party great resistance to any other agreement with the IMF and the euro countries. He wants a blank check from the voters for breaking election promises which he also gets its own stalwarts back into line. That the other euro countries there, led by Jeroen Dijsselbloem united not go along is self-preservation, not contempt for the Greek democracy. The heavily damaged credibility of the euro zone can no longer be the hostage of an unguided political missile if SYRIZA government.
Sage Tsipras which his colleagues and lenders seized Friday night in the European Council, bordering bad faith. He came with his referendum barely 24 hours after they had parted and after it had been searched on two European summits in a week’s time for a solution to his problems
The Greeks, who for five years a hard bill for the mistakes of their leaders deserve better. Portugal, Ireland, Spain and their relatives in Cyprus show that there is a way forward where there is a political will. They also provide evidence that the euro in more than 98% of the euro area is indeed irreversible. The magical-Syriza paradox that lenders and criminal “guilty” and that resistance against itself will lead to reversal of reality, based on voter and self-deception. When the Greeks speak Sunday, they deserve a restart.
