Majority Dutch afraid of Arctic oil spill
At this time dragging the oil company’s drilling platform in Asia through Seattle to Alaska. From this platform, Shell wants to drill in early June in the fragile Arctic. The Greenpeace activists say not to obstruct the navigation, but as long as possible on the platform to show the world what Shell is planning.
Faiza Oulahsen, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace Netherlands, is worried about the drilling plans by Shell. “Not only must the oil in the ground to keep climate damage in hand, an oil spill in the Arctic is inevitable. There are no proven effective methods to stop an oil spill in this sensitive area and to clean up. ”
Obama
US President Obama has recently ratified the drilling permits Shell in the Chukchi Sea. He thus explains not only the protests of citizens, environmental organizations and scientists ignore, but also the objections of his own government organization; Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The probability of a major oil spill the BOOM estimates at 75%. In addition, a study in Nature concludes that keep 100% of the Arctic Oil in the soil must remain, we want the global warming below the critical limit of 2 degrees Celsius.
Dutch Shell fall down
The distrust of the Dutch population with respect to the plans of Shell takes according to the environmental movement rapidly. Recent research commissioned by Greenpeace Motivaction shows that Dutch see no benefit in oil drilling in the Arctic. Only 9% of over 1,000 respondents supports the plan, such as Shell.
In contrast, the majority (58%) of the Dutch population afraid of an oil spill in an area already ravaged by climate change. 41 percent think nothing of the Arctic remains if there is going to be drilled for oil. Governments, in this case allow the US, the drilling, only sees 9% as a sign that ‘it safe “will be.
Previous research from Greenpeace that only three quarters of the world’s population for protection of the Arctic. Nearly 7 million people worldwide support the petition for protection of the Arctic.
Shell may be of Dutch origin and have a thick finger in the pie of Dutch politics; also in The Hague, opinions are not entirely positive about this controversial topic. The end of 2014 took a majority in the House a motion to oil and gas extraction in the Arctic. (DVDM)
