Vakantieverhuursite Airbnb in Amsterdam, make it impossible to find an apartment more than 60 nights per year to rent. The U.s. company has about that long to negotiate a deal with the municipality of Amsterdam.
The city hopes that because of this, the nuisance caused by tourists is declining, and that there are less houses throughout the year be rented out to tourists and therefore no longer available for residents.
From 1 January Amsterdam Airbnb rentals a dagenteller to see on the site. Once in a year their apartment 60 days rented, they can no new bookings accepted.
Enforcement
Amsterdam suggested a few years ago the rule in that houses up to 60 days may be rented to tourists, but could not Airbnb to force people to be loved.
Many tourist cities are struggling with the rise of Airbnb. In Berlin and New York is Airbnb largely prohibited. Recently gave Barcelona the company a fine of 600,000 euros for the participation in the illegal rental of apartments.
‘Example for the world’
The deal of Amsterdam with Airbnb is unique. Nowhere else in Europe has Airbnb such a deal with a municipality. “This measure is an example for the world,” says James McClure, manager North Europe at Airbnb. “This shows that positive results can be reached if policy makers and Airbnb work together.”
Alderman Live Laurens Ivens is happy with the deal. “A home should be a home stay. This agreement is in the interest of everyone in the city: residents, neighbors, Airbnb-hosts and guests. Through cooperation with Airbnb, we have a new weapon in the fight against illegal hotels.
Exception
An exception is there for people who are but a part of their house rent, for example, a room, and yourself to remain present. As long as people less than 40 percent of their floor space to rent out, they can be eligible for a bed & breakfast-permit from the municipality. If they go to Airbnb to demonstrate that they have such a licence, they may also come longer than 60 days to rent.
Airbnb is by far the largest site for holiday apartments, but not the only one. There are also other providers, such as HomeAway and Wimdu. Also on Booking.com be apartments offered. Landlords can, therefore, after their 60 days at Airbnb ‘on’, their apartment still through other sites. Amsterdam says, therefore, with other sites of a similar deal to pursue.
