More money, fewer rules: the municipalities started experimenting with assistance – RTL News

Municipalities may 2017 to start experimenting with the social welfare. Hundreds of bijstandsgerechtigden do not have strict rules to life and may earn more money.

A group of people of tilburg was the strict bijstandsregels sick and tired. That would bijstandgerechtigden to inhibit from their uitkeringssituatie to come. They wanted that assistance on the kick went. Now they get (some of) their meaning.

In Utrecht, Groningen, Wageningen, and Tilburg, the municipalities of large-scale tests be run with a custom aid scheme. People in the assistance need not to apply for vacancies (booked). They may also two times as much to earn if the case now is: up to a maximum of 199 euros per month, without their allowance is reduced.

no basic income

Completely satisfied the promoters have not: they really wanted a basic income implementation. But it is a step in the right direction, says Erik de Ridder, CDA alderman in Tilburg. “We hear increasing noises about the introduction of a basic income. Before you have entered it, you’re already a few steps further. But then we thought: what can we already do?”

Eventually crossed the four cities mentioned their heads together for an experiment. About one thing they were agreed: more people need assistance. Also, they got a lot of complaints from people in the assistance. “In the past years, we are becoming increasingly stricter policy for people with a benefit. Many people find that very annoying, and they see the strict rules as distrust and find the current system is oppressive.”

Freedom, joy?

It is yet to be a trial, emphasized the state secretary level of client (Social Affairs). “The point is: how can we help people who are on welfare are now to a job? The one says: you need to have them totally free. The other says: you need intensive help and their behind-the-pants to sit. Those two extremes we can go explore now.”

Several universities will be in the next two years in what the trial produces. Then, the results are evaluated.

“Give them a feather’

The Tilburg alderman hopes that the experiment succeeds. So he finds it crazy that people in a assistance now hardly anything is allowed to earn without having their benefit is reduced. “You want people to stimulate on the social ladder to climb up. Now we do the opposite. I would say, if people with a assistance of a penny to earn some extra money: give them a compliment.” Of work is more work, hopes the alderman.

it is expected that only in Tilburg, about 600 bijstandgerechtigden participate. That’s about 10 percent of all bijstandgerechtigden in the south of the city. Total may 25 municipalities included in the trial.
