The self-propelled Ford gets no steering wheel, accelerator and brake, Ford said Tuesday. The car is specifically designed for taxis and some cars driving around without a driver. Ford expects such cars the taxi market to dominate the next decade.
To achieve its goal, the company is expanding its presence in tech center Silicon Valley around the city of San Francisco significantly from, including through the construction of a private campus in Palo Alto. The number of staff will be there to double next year. Now employs about 130 researchers and engineers for Ford in Silicon Valley.
Ford invests in start-ups that can help the company to the necessary technology. This involves among other things the development of advanced algorithms for autonomous vehicles, 3D maps and radar and camera sensors.
With the announcement explicitly Ford joins in the battle with include Google, Apple and BMW, which would also come with a fully autonomous car in the coming years and already plans or even working prototypes presented
