Something less goods are transported via port of Rotterdam – NU.nl

The transshipment of the port of Rotterdam is anything last year lagged behind that of the record year of 2015.

the Port of Rotterdam is despite the slight decrease “gently satisfied”. “This was the second best year ever,” placed ceo Allard Castelein Thursday, the annual figures in perspective.

Castelein emphasized that, never seen so many containers were transshipped in Rotterdam last year. There were more benefited from new terminals on the Second Maasvlakte, in the second half of the year steam came out.

Antwerpen

In the last six months of 2016 increased transshipment also stronger than that of major competitor Antwerp. The port of Rotterdam has maintained its market share of container throughput at 30 percent, still a quarter more than Antwerp.

The port says, for large challenges, such as digitisation and the energy transition. It is a commitment to innovation as the re-use of (chemical) waste, waste heat, offshoreactiviteiten in favour of wind farms at sea and the capture of CO2.

Castelein see the energy transition as an opportunity. He had also know not to be afraid of the consequences of possible American opposition to the international climate objectives. According to him, that targets “everywhere in the world accepted, even by large countries such as India and China”.

However, he warned for the consequences of protectionism in the United States and the United

Kingdom. Trade embargoes are, according to him, the potential to be harmful for the port of Rotterdam. “Protectionism is not the line that the world would have to follow,” said Castelein.

Cheap Chinese steel

The decline came mainly on the account of so-called dry bulk cargo like coal and ore. The transfer of crude oil and other wet bulk cargo remained roughly unchanged at the high level a year ago. The total volume of cargo handled decreased by 1.1 percent to 461,2 million tons.

The lower demand for iron ore came under the more because the world market was flooded with cheap Chinese steel. The coal is under pressure due to the closure of coal-fired power plants in the Netherlands due to the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The container throughput, measured in containers of 20 feet (teu), which increased last year by 1.2 percent. There were more benefited from the new terminals on the Second Maasvlakte, in the second half of the year steam came out.

Sales

The revenue for the Port of rotterdam remained stable at 675,4 million euro. The profit increased by cost savings of 5 percent to 222,2 million.

For 2017 is expected the Port authority that the transshipment volume at a similar level as last year. The container set is expected to be the upward trend, but whether the other sectors the results of 2016 will match is “uncertain”.
