The increase of the number of enterprises is partly due to a record number of 192.672 starters. Also, there were fewer terminations than in the past five years. The number of beginning full-time self-employed persons decreased slightly, but that was offset by a considerable increase of the number of part-time starters.

The Chamber of commerce suspects that more people have a part-time business started because they undertake with other activities to combine. This may be a part-time job, voluntary work or household work.

Industry

The number of starters and stoppers differs greatly per sector. The number of enterprises in the industry increased in 2016 by 20 percent. In the logistics industry grew by 7 percent. Main cause for this increase is the changed legislation, allowing more taxi companies register at the Chamber of commerce.

The number of companies in the agriculture and horticulture decreased by 15 percent. That decline is, according to the Chamber of commerce already going on, because it is often difficult for successors to be found in the sector.

Survival

Five years after the foundation consists of about 60 percent of the companies yet. Also there are strong differences by sector. For financial institutions is that 75 percent of the companies five years after the foundation still exists. The survival of companies in the retail sector are the smallest. That means only 46 percent of the more than five years.

In 2015 went 4.065 main offices bankrupt. That is 16 percent less than in 2015. However, there were more branches involved in the bankruptcy: 1.735 opposite 1.061 a year earlier. The main reason of the large number of subsidiaries that in a bankruptcy, is the bankruptcy of many retail chains.
