For the first time consumers pay more pin than cash – NU.nl

Half of the purchases at stores, gas stations, restaurants and other venues were paid by debit card, according to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and Payments Association Netherlands on Tuesday.

49.5 percent of purchases were paid with cash and a further 0.5 percent by credit card.

From 2014 to 2015, the number of debit card payments increased from 2.91 billion to 3.23 billion. With this, there are 40 million more debit cards than done with cash

Small amounts

the total value of debit card payments has long been higher. 2015 was EUR 93 billion of purchases paid with pin against 40 billion in cash.

In recent years pegs consumers often small amounts. Consumers paid in 2010 11 percent of their purchases under 5 euros by debit card, in 2015 they did so in 30 percent of cases.
