Russia meets with controversial Arctic oil drilling – De Morgen

The Russian state oil company Rosneft has discovered oil in its controversial drilling, along with the American Exxon Mobil, at an oil field in the Kara Sea, north of Siberia. “The first oil is extracted, the find is above our expectations,” said Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin.

The area is good for him, according to one billion barrels of oil, similar to the amount of oil in the American part of the Gulf of Mexico. Further work is being hampered because of Western sanctions against Russia. These measures prohibit American oil companies to assist in the exploitation of oil fields in the Arctic Russia.

American Exxon Mobil and the Russian state company Rosneft began in August with test drilling in the Kara Sea north of Siberia. Operations in the Arctic apply to both sides as an important opportunity for new oil fields.
