European staalbazen against Chinese dumpstaal – NOS

58 members of the senior management of European steel companies are asking the government to act against the mass-dumping of Chinese steel. In a joint letter requirements they are much higher anti-dumpingboetes and possibilities to react quickly if the penalties turn out to be ineffective. The jobs of 320.000 steel workers would be at stake.

The past few years are already tens of thousands of jobs disappeared in the European steel industry. By overproduction, prices have sharply gone down. China, but also Russia and Iran, to dump their excess steel far below cost on the European market.

“There is not reluctant to compete,” says a spokesperson of the European dome of steel producers, Eurofer. “Europe must do something now. They let the Chinese for three years, go on their way.”

The fines against practising dumping in the United States is ten times higher than that in Europe, the letter writers. Europe responds still only months too late. “The European trade defence instruments are quite slow, in comparison to that of our trading partners.”

The letter was co-signed by the ceo of Tata Steel Europe, Hans Fischer. Also, Tata Steel has a lot of trouble with the Chinese dumpingen. Last month demonstrated, hundreds of employees of Tata Steel headquarters in IJmuiden for the maintenance of employment.

The steel industry is on the agenda of the eu Summit at the end of this week. The steel manufacturers would then also agree on the costs for reducing the CO2 emissions. The environmental measures would be “fair and feasible” to eliminate unfair competition with steel producers outside Europe to avoid.
