El País boss drags colleagues to court to Panama Publication Papers – Financieele Dagblad

CEO Juan Luis Cebrián of the powerful Spanish media stronghold Prisa, owner of inter alia the newspaper El País, is furious because his name has been associated with Panama Papers.

the journalist Teresa Aranda plunged therein as representative of a company in the Seychelles that was active between 2004 and 2010 . Aranda, the wife of Cebrián at that time, shared that position in the offshore company Granite Corporation with some classical stooges “of the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, said the online newspaper El Confidencial

Defamatory messages and comments

wealthy Cebrián does not leave it at that. In his struggle against the “slanderous messages and comments” El Confidencial and two other Spanish media he seems determined to leave no means unused. From the front page of El País he legal action this week to announce El Confidencial, El Diario and the television channel La Sexta.

But that’s revenge Cebrián had not subsided yet. The well-known radio station SER, also owned by his media group Prisa, the firm political commentator Ignacio Escolar sent immediately from the lane. The was commissioned by the Cebrián to the fact that Escolar editor of El Diario, one of the offending media.

Uncomfortable facts

It seems that Cebrián his violent reaction has overplayed his hand. The past few days were more uncomfortable facts surfaced which questioned his actions. Cebrián turned shareholder and until recently also been commissioner of the oil company Star Petroleum. That company is controlled by Mossack Fonseca by the company Hypersonic Ltd. from the tax haven of Seychelles.

On December 20, 2015 Cebrián resigned as commissioner of the Star Petroleum registered in Luxembourg. That was just two days after his media group Prisa had adopted a new code of ethics. This code prohibits board members to have accounts and companies in tax havens.

Opaque contract

Star Petroleum was founded by the Iranian-Spanish multimillionaire Massoud Farshad Zandi. According to El Confidencial Zandi has 2% of the shares present made to Cebrián, a small gift to the value of € 9.78 mln It is not clear which Cebrián owes this generosity

Volgens the non-governmental organization Global Witness Star Petroleum produces oil anywhere in the world, the company does not disclose its shareholders and has recently signed a contract with opaque South Sudan.

According to Ignacio Escolar Juan Luis Cebrián has a lot of explaining to his numerous readers and listeners. “Why Cebrián is the first in Spain dragging his fellow journalists to court because they tell the truth of the Panama Papers?” He asks.
