Walloons keep leg stiff: no CETA for Belgium – NOS

Belgium has a national representation five deelparlementen: for Wallonia, the French-speaking community, Flanders, the Brussels Capital Region and the German-speaking community. That parliaments should be international treaties in their jurisdiction and transmit it to the federal parliament. But because Wallonia refuses to do so, the federal government, CETA will not sign.

Content to make the French objection to including the CETA agreements in the area of agriculture and also in other countries, controversial way of resolving disputes between investors and governments.

‘.’

But Ceta is also the plaything to become the domestic political scheming. The French-speaking socialist party PS, which reigns in Wallonia, but for the first time since time immemorial, not in a federal government. That power base loot the PS now off to the hated government of the French-speaking liberal prime minister Michel a heel.

There are mainly the Flemish people angry about it. Minister-president Bourgeois of Flanders will find that the Walloons are irresponsible drafting. “It’s bad for our country, bad for our economy and so also for the Walloon economy”, so let him know. “We are the laughing stock of Europe.”

To CETA into force, all individual countries to the treaty to approve. Also the Council of Ministers of Europe and the European Parliament have their blessings yet to give.

Hard judgement

In the Belgian politics is hard judged, in particular, the socialist party PS. That rule in Wallonia, but sit in the national parliament in the opposition. The Belgian minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders says: “I meeting on this topic with five socialist ministers in Europe. They never have concerns in this area.”

Still, the Walloon prime minister Magnette, do not plan his point of view to change. “We give no consent to the federal parliament to draw. There is no agreement,” says the prime minister of Wallonia.

The Trade ministers of the EU come Tuesday in Luxembourg at each other about the situation to talk to.
