The figures in the table above are from 2014, “because the Belgian production figures over 2015 are not yet known”, said chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of the CBS. “But I expect that the Netherlands still has the largest frietproducent, and that the proportion of recent years has increased.”

Especially the United Kingdom will buy a lot of our frozen potato products. Also Germany, France, Saudi Arabia and Italy buy a lot of frozen French fries, potato croquettes and rösti in the Netherlands.

The big question is whether the Netherlands is the number 1 position this year retains. Many potato farmers are in tension, because a large part of the potatoes still in the ground. It has the last couple of weeks and little rain, causing in many places the soil is very dry. Especially on clay soils the soil is too hard to be potatoes to harvest.

Long is not always the watering of the fields, the solution, says Jaap van Wenum, chairman of farmers ‘ organization LTO is Arable land. “The problem is particularly in the province of Zeeland, and there is a lot of clay soil and little fresh water.”
