IMF support Suriname according Bouterse – NU.nl

Suriname will use this money to fill the almost empty coffers. That President Desi Bouterse Wednesday afternoon (local time) during a press conference said in Paramaribo.

Other foreign agencies have made commitments for financial support, said Bouterse. He expects a total of about $ 1 billion to be received (approximately 887 million euros). It is not yet clear under what conditions money is borrowed.

The country has more than half a year, major financial problems. Surinamese dollar is therefore more than 50 percent declined in value.

According to the government, the problems caused by the low world market prices for oil and gold, important export products for Suriname. Many Surinamese are however convinced that the bad situation is the result of overspending and corruption by the government of Bouterse
