German Chancellor Angela Merkel this morning warned the Bundestag for chaos if there is no agreement to continue negotiating the with Greece on a new aid package. Today, the parliament will vote on the deal reached Monday.
Merkel urged members of the Bundestag to vote for further negotiations with the Greeks on a third aid package to the country. It is expected that a majority in the Bundestag will also do so, but Merkel is at home or under fire because of the deal.
Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is highly critical of the deal, arguing that Greece had better do to temporarily leave the euro. That would give the country time to put things in order. Merkel is not in favor of it:
“The alternative to this deal is no time-out for Greece to temporarily leave the eurozone, but chaos. We would be in serious and irresponsible act like we did not try it this way.
About fifty parliamentarians have indicated from Merkel’s conservative alliance to vote against the deal.
Monday Greece reached an agreement with the other countries in the eurozone on a third package of emergency aid of about 85 billion euros. Some euro zone members must vote to make that possible, including Germany. The Greek parliament voted day before yesterday in a series of major reforms.
The measures were necessary to win the confidence of the other members of the eurozone, since there are many doubts about the willingness of the Greeks to implement the reforms.
