Conversations Eurozone and Greece continue Monday – AD.nl

The talks in Brussels between the finance ministers of the euro countries Greece has been very intense. So intense that the prepared joint statement was canceled on behalf of the Eurogroup. Ministers could not agree on the content and wording of the text.

“It is not the wording, but the amount of progress made. Made, but not enough, “said Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem. He talked about constructive discussions and said that Monday will be further discussed again. Dan is a regular consultation between the euro countries on the agenda.

Dijsselbloem would hardly say something about the content of the conversations that evening. The final press conference was also very short.

Member States even managed to reach a consensus on the next steps to be taken. “We could not reach agreement with Greece on conversations that might take place between now and Monday, Dijsselbloem said.

Proposal

There was a proposal to identify the differences between the plans of Athens and the previous agreements under the current program. That would do a team of lenders with the Greeks together, so here Monday could be discussed further on.

It was the first meeting with the new Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. The new government in Athens will on the part of Europe imposed stringent austerity policies.

The country seemed to agree that there should be considered an extension of the current support program, which expires at the end of the month . A final text was ready, so it sounds in Brussels. However, Varoufakis could, reportedly after a phone call with Athens, yet not accept the joint final text.

Varoufakis called his first Eurogroup meeting a “fascinating” experience. He said that this meeting had never intended to reach an agreement. Varoufakis hopes that Monday the talks could lead to a conclusion that both the Greeks and the euro countries is good.

On Thursday, the political leaders of the EU in Brussels. There too Greece will be discussed.
