A confidence vote was not necessary, nothing obliged the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls so. But he still asked support to the parliament for his new government, after his first try was stranded after five months. He survived that, albeit narrowly: 269 for, 244 against. Which in any case has shown, our correspondent says Peter Vermaas, is that he has no opponents within his own Socialist Party convinced.

It is striking for example that 32 Socialists abstained. In April, when confidence vote was Valls’ first government, there were 11

Valls has the task of dragging France. Out of the economic crisis Could be achieved through reforms, but also government spending must be drastically reduced. His plans and those of president and party colleague Francois Hollande therefore sensitive to the left of their own party. This ‘frondeurs’ think Valls left ideals abandon. Valls emphasized in a speech today that he does not pursue policies of ‘austérité’, from hard cut.

Valls-1 fell in August after criticism of his policies from his own government. So pleaded his Minister of Economic Affairs, Arnaud Montebourg, openly an economic change of course, that he was totally against the policy of Valls and Hollande. Montebourg was one of the politicians of the left wing of the Socialist Party, which was put to also vote. Satisfied that side of the party in government

But Montebourg and other internal critics are now no more, that’s the main difference between two-and Valls Valls-1. And immediately a reason to be concerned about the longer tenure of this government. Bit more optimistic Vermaas:

“Now there are people that the line of Hollande and Valls basically support rather than colleagues who carry out the government opposition.”

The next hurdle wait all soon: the budget. And there is also going to be voted on again.
