German Chancellor Angela Merkel supports the candidacy of the Spaniard Luis de Guindos as Chairman of the Eurogroup. The Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, fulfills that function today and his term expires next year. De Guindos, Minister of Economic Affairs in the Spanish government.
Merkel said De Guindos an ‘excellent’ minister in ‘difficult times’. She expressed her support for the Spanish minister at a press conference in Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. She spoke with the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and walked with him a piece of the famous pilgrim route to the pilgrimage to Saint James.
The leaders of the 28 EU member states speak next Saturday at an extra summit the completion of a series of European stations.
The spokeswoman Dijsselbloem will not comment on the statements by Merkel. She points out that Dijsselbloem until mid next year, Chairman of the Eurogroup remains. She would not comment on rumors that Dijsselbloem also in the market for a post in the new European Commission.
